Victoria is Western Canada's oldest city. The City began in 1843 as a trading post, named in honour of Queen Victoria. Today with an estimated regional population of 326,000, a moderate climate and scenic setting, Victoria has a very vital but comfortable quality of life. The City is proud of its British heritage, its fine homes and neighbourhoods, its historic and attractive downtown, the flowers and parks and, of course, the Inner Harbour with its vistas toward the famous Empress Hotel and the Parliament Buildings. We visited the city centre on Sunday 6th June in persisting rain. We walked Gouvernment street for the major shops like The Bay Centre and down to the Museum of British Columbia. We spend two hours in this beautifull museum with interesting galleries on the First Nations, the european pioneers and the wildlife in the province. We went to the Irish Times Pub for a drink and lovely dinner. We did not feel like walking back so we took the Victoria Harbour ferry back to the Westbay Marina.

Victoria is de oudste stad van West Canada en begon als een handelspost in 1843 genoemd naar Koningin Victoria. Vandaag met een geschatte bevolking van 326.000, een gematigd klimaat en in een mooie omgeving is Victoria een vitale stad met een comfortabele levensstijl. De stad is trots op haar Britse erfgoed, zijn mooie huizen en buurten, zijn historische en actractieve centrum, de parken en bloemen en natuurlijk de binnenste haven met zijn zicht op het beroemde Empress Hotel en de Parlements gebouwen. We bezochten het stadscentrum in voortdurende regen. We liepen Gouvernment Street af langs de belangrijkste winkels zoals het Bay Centre en verder naar beneden naar het museum van British Columbia. We brachten 2 uur door in dit prachtige museum met zalen over de oorspronkelijke bewoners (First Nations), de europese pioniers en de natuur in de provincie. We gingen naar de Irish Times Pub om wat te drinken en een prima maaltijd. We hadden geen zin terug te lopen dus namen we de Victoria havenveerboot terug naar de Westbay Marina.

We drove from Fraserway to the Taswassen BC Ferries terminal in about 30 min. We took the 1 pm ferry to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. Just when we left the terminal we saw 3 orca’s passing by. We were told that it is very rare to see them so close to the harbour. It was the first wildlife of our trip. On arrival 1,5 hrs. later on the island we drove 32 km south to Victoria. We reden van Fraserway in ongeveer 30 min. naar de BC Ferries terminal in Tsaswassen. We namen de boot van 13.00 uur naar Swartzbay op Vancouver Island. Net als we uitvaren zien we drie orca’s voorbij zwemmen. Ons werd gezegd dat het zeldzaam is ze zo dicht bij de haven te zien. Het waren de eerste wilde dieren van onze reis. Bij aankomst op het eiland 1.5 uur later rijden we 32 km naar het zuiden naar Victoria.

We stayed at West Bay Marina RV Park on the Victoria Harbour. We had a nice view on Victoria Inner Harbour. We walked to the city centre in 45 min. on the West Bay Walk. On the way back to the campsite we took the Victoria Harbour Ferry. We overnachtten op West Bay Marina RV Park aan de haven van Victoria. We hadden mooi uitzicht op Victoria’s binnenhaven. We liepen in 45 min. naar het stadscentrum over de West Bay Walk. Op de terugweg naar de caming namen we de Victoria Harbour veerboot.
